On 23rd of June, a referendum will be held to decide whether Britain should leave or remain in the European Union. In the event that the yes vote prevails, could the Cadbury’s American owner change the recipe to suit its own taste or take the production away from Britain altogether?
EU rules demand chocolate contains 30per cent cocoa compared with only 10per cent in the US. Emeritus Professor Mike Gordon said that this is what makes British chocolate so delicious.
A spokesman for Mondelez International, which owns Kraft and took over Cadbury in 2010, said that the company is watching the EU referendum campaign closely.
"As a business that sells products across the EU, we look forward to having clarity on the UK's role within Europe so that we can have certainty and make long term plans for our business,"
He added that there are currently no plans to move production out of Bournville, which was upgraded in 2014 with a £75million investment.
However, the company did not comment on the possibility of recipe changes.
"We can't say anything else at this point," the spokesman said.
