The Royal Princess, the second child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, is named Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, as confirmed by Kensington Palace. The fourth in line to the throne was born on Saturday in the Lindo Wing of London’s St Mary’s Hospital. She weighed 8lbs 30z.
Charlotte is the feminine form of Charles, the father of Prince William and the name of two former kings. While Elizabeth is the name of the Queen and of course, Diana, is the princess’s paternal grandmother.
Based on figures from the Office for National Statistics, Charlotte is the 21st most popular girl’s name in England and Wales while Elizabeth is 39th in the list. Meanwhile, the name Diana did not make it to the top 100.
The duke and duchess are currently at home in Kensington Palace following the birth. It is understood that they will remain there for the time being.
Meanwhile, Royal historian Hugo Vickers said that the couple chose Charlotte based on taste rather than history.
"I don't think she is burdened by any history associated with it and to be honest I think they just chose the name because they liked it, which is what they do and what we respect about them.
"We historians can always find someone called Charlotte but I think basically they just liked the name."
