Bruno Langley, who played Todd Grimshaw in the soap, is to appear in at least one episode of the 13-part series to be aired next year.
Langley left the Coronation Street last month, saying he wanted to "develop himself as an actor" and the new role should give him that opportunity.
He will play a mysterious character so far known only as Adam and may become a recurring character towards the end of the series.
There is already speculation that he could be another love interest for the Doctor's sidekick Rose Tyler, to be played by Billie Piper, although it is unclear as yet whether his character will be good or bad.
Langley has had a central role in Coronation Street's plot over the past year and made the headlines when his character was involved in the programme's first on-screen gay kiss.
