Vodaphone has confirmed that criminals have used customer details to try to access accounts between Wednesday and Thursday. It added that 1,827 accounts putting their information such as names and some bank details at risk. However, the telecommunications giant assured that its systems have not been breached although the criminals may have gained customers’ phone numbers, bank sort codes, and the last four digits of their bank account numbers.
The news comes just over a week after TalkTalk suffered a cyber attack wherein personal and banking details may have been accessed by hackers.
Meanwhile, all the 1,827 affected customers were already been notified and were told that there is no need to be concerned about. They were instead encouraged to get in touch with their banks to ensure that their accounts are protected and to be careful with phishing emails. Any unusual activity on the accounts must be reported to the national fraud and internet crime reporting centre Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040
Vodafone added that the incident has been reported to the National Crime Agency, the Information Commissioner’s Office, and Ofcom.
An NCA spokeswoman said: "The NCA can confirm that we have been contacted by Vodafone in relation to a compromise of customer data, and we are in dialogue with the company.
"Anyone who thinks they have been subject to attempted or successful fraud, or other online crime, should report it to action fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk."
