Veteran BBC DJ David Lowe was “forced” to resign for accidentally playing the song The Sun Has Got His Hat On by Ambrose & His Orchestra, which was an old version that contained the n-word. Only one listener complained.
This news of Lowe's dismissal did not sit well with several supporters including Boris Johnson who condemned BBC saying that the way the situation was handled was “utterly disgraceful.”
Meanwhile, fans of Mr Lowe took to Twitter pointing out BBC’s refusal to sack Jeremy Clarkson for allegedly using the same racial slur while filming Top Gear.
The mayor of London compared the move with “Boko Haram world” - a reference to the Islamic terrorist group based in Nigeria that kidnapped over 200 young girls.
Mr Johnson wrote in his Daily Telegraph column: ‘In our own modest way, we live in a Boko Haram world, where it all depends on the swirling rage of the internet mob, and where terrified bureaucrats and politicians are borne along on a torrent of confected outrage.
‘There is no consistency in the outlook of the Nigerian maniacs: they use weapons produced by the very capitalist system they claim to deplore, for instance.
‘There is certainly no logic at the BBC. They should restore Mr Lowe to his job – if he will take it – and the entire BBC board should go down to Devon to apologise in person, and at their own expense.
Meanwhile, a BBC spokesman has admitted that the situation could have been handled better and said that Mr Lowe is welcome to come back. However, the DJ revealed on his website his decision not to take the job back due to the stress of the ordeal causing an exacerbation of his symptoms of Dystonia, the neurological condition from which he suffers.
