Vera Lynn tops charts at 92

Veteran singer Dame Vera Lynn has become the oldest living artist to top the UK album chart.

The 92-year-old's best-of compilation knocked off last week's chart-toppers Arctic Monkeys into fourth place and managed to triumph over all of the Beatles' remastered catalogue releases.

Lynn took first place with her album, 'We'll Meet Again - The Very Best of Vera Lynn', which has been climbing the chart in recent weeks.

Lynn isn't the only artist to see a sharp rises in sales - Pixie Lott topped this week's singles charts with 'Boys and Girls'. Her single climbed an epic 72 places since last week.

Dame Vera Lynn, who was best known for boosting the morale of millions of soldiers and civilians during the second world war, first re-entered the charts at the end of August.

The veteran singer said she would "never have dreamt" that the album would have charted again - let alone go to number one. "But there you go, you never know what's round the corner do you?" she said.

In at second place is Jamie T's latest album, 'Kings and Queens'.

Despite her renewed fame, Dame Vera has no plans to start recording again, insisting that the only reason why the album came out was to honour the memory of the war. It was released to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the declaration of war.

Meanwhile, four Beatles albums appear in the top 10, after the remastered full collection of their music sparked Beatlemania once again.

'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' reached the highest position at number five, followed by 'Abbey Road' at six, 'Revolver' at ninth place and 'Rubber Soul' at tenth place. The remastered box sets also charted, with the stereo collection hitting the top 40 and detracting album sales from the standalone albums themselves.
