BBC axe drama after just two series...

Upstairs Downstairs has been axed by the BBC just weeks after its second series finished airing.

The BBC One period drama had seen a sharp decline in viewers during its second series run, finishing with just over four million viewers.

Comparatively, ITV1Â’s Downton Abbey regularly achieves 11million viewers.

A source told The Sun:

"Upstairs Downstairs was a popular show when we brought it back after all those years, but interest soon waned.

"Downton is a dominant force in that area, so there was no point in a similar show for fewer viewers."

Neil Jackson, who starred in the drama as Harry Spargo, tweeted:

"Such a shame. I have just heard that the BBC will not be making any more Upstairs Downstairs. I loved the show and will miss... [it] greatly."

The showÂ’s writer, Heidi Thomas McGann added:

"No more Updown. Not surprised - and a bit relieved as my diary was looking unworkable. But I will miss the characters.

"We all put a lot of love into making it, and IÂ’m so glad it gave you pleasure."
