UK Soldier detained on Terrorism Act

A UK soldier has been arrested after a nail bomb was found at a house in Salford.

A serving UK soldier has been arrested under the Terrorism Act after a nail bomb was discovered at a house in Salford. Based on reports, the 19-year-old soldier, who was arrested in Germany, was brought back to Britain for questioning. However, he has been released on bail.

BBC reports that he was questioned about suspected links to right-wing extremism.

On Thursday, the Greater Manchester Police was following up on a tip they have received about images of abuse on a computer. While executing the warrant in Mellor Street, Patricroft, they have found the suspected nail bomb. In connection with this, another 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing abusive images. Police said that they have recovered "several items of literature which could be viewed by some as potentially inflammatory".

The discoveries led to the arrest of the serving UK soldier in Germany. His barracks was also searched.

Police said in a statement: "A cordon was put in place and a number of residents were evacuated as a precautionary measure.”

"Specialist officers assessed the device and were later able to confirm it was no longer a threat to the community."
