Following in the footsteps of a growing number of animation hits to grace the silver screen this summer, Pixar's The Incredibles has launched itself to the top of the UK box office with 9.8 million in ticket sales.
While this substantial sum includes around 3.5 million from early previews, the popularity of the superhero family confirms the success of a genre which is still less than two decades old.
Slotting in at number two this week is Brit flick sequel Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, from UK studio hit machine Working Title, which took 3 million over the weekend and a total of 27 million since its release three weeks ago.
In third place is thriller The Forgotten with 654,000, starring Julianne Moore as a mother caught up in a labyrinthine conspiracy which leads her to question the existence of her son.
The Grudge clawed its way into fourth place, having amassed a not insubstantial 7.2 million in just under a month.
