A day after Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni approved an anti-gay bill, which punishes gay sex with up to life in jail, at the start of the week a local tabloid – The Red Pepper - has published what it called the country’s “200 top” homosexuals under the headline: EXPOSED!
The list included Pepe Julian Onziema, a gay activist who has repeatedly warned that Uganda’s new anti-gay law could spark violence against homosexuals. He said that homosexuals in the country need help.
"They are scared and they need help," he said. "Some want to leave the country and they are asking to be helped. Some of the employers have read the paper, and from the descriptions they can tell who these people are."
Onziema stated that the list also outed many who had not yet publicly come out as being homosexual.
The local police chief confirmed that, as yet, no one had been arrested.
