Commuters were surprised by U2 members who disguised themselves as old hippies to go busking on the New York subway. They were stunned to learn that the four hippies were U2 playing an impromptu gig, a stunt for America’s Tonight Show.
Thousands walked past the group without recognising Bono and his bandmates.
Passer-by Angela Thresh, 39, said: “They just looked like ageing hippies.
“But when they revealed who they were the whole of Grand Central was wanting to see. It was electric.”
The band performed several tracks, including 1988 hit Angel of Harlem.
This is not the first time that the band pulled off an unplanned concert. They previously brought the streets of Los Angeles to a stop when filming the video for Where the Streets Have No Name.
