Two blasts hit Syria’s capital Damascus

Wednesday morning saw two large explosions being set off in Syria’s capital, Damascus. It is suspected the area was hit because there are military compounds based there. State news group SANA explained that fires broke out following the blasts.

 

According to reports, the Information Minister Omran Zoabi accredited the explosions to roadside bombs, and that the army headquarters in the city may have been chosen as a site for one explosion in particular.

 

Officials have said there were no injuries as a result of the incident which is contrary to some claims.

 

The blasts went off at 7am in Syria, with ambulances attending the scene near Omayyad Square. Police were thought to have sealed off certain areas, and as explained by The Independent, witnesses have claimed that gunfire followed the explosions.

 

Recently an armed rebel group, called the Free Syrian Army, said they were to have their command working from inside Syria as reported by the BBC, and that Syrian enforcements have been set up surrounding the army compound in an effort by the government to clamp down on rebel parties.

 

This latest rebel movement comes following actions that date back to early 2011, where reportedly political protestors were dealt with heavily by the Syrian government as part of President Bashar Assad's regime.

 

It is understood many people have lost their lives due to violence that has spread across Syria since.
