Two arrested at Heathrow over terrorism charges

Two people arrested on Tuesday night at Heathrow airport are suspected of committing terrorism. A man and woman are being held in UK police custody as part of an investigation in to travel to Syria, where a political uprising has seen many people support the supposed terrorist activity.

 

Both individuals, aged 26, were picked up by the Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Command at 8.30pm on Tuesday after arriving at London’s popular airport.

 

Reportedly the pair was arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism, and they remain in custody at a police station in London. This follows reports that individuals are understood to be going to Syria from the UK to supposedly take part in the uprising there.

 

Since early last year, activists have been rebelling against President Bashar al-Assad with many thousands of people believed to have lost their lives so far during the struggle.

 

The Foreign Secretary William Hague has told the BBC that the UK government knew of Britons travelling to Syria in regards to the fighting.

 

He said: “That's not something we recommend, and we do not want British people taking part in violent situations anywhere in the world.”

 

Police will search two locations in London under the Terrorism Act according to the Met Office, as part of their investigations.
