A new TV drama in Australia has premiered on UK’s Channel 5. Wentworth Prison is top-billed by Australian actress Nicole de Silva who is known for playing tough roles. She previously played the role of a young car thief in Dangerous, an Australian Drama, for which she was nominated for Most Outstanding New Talent. In Wentworth Prison, viewers will see her behind bars fighting for her life.
Wentworth Prison, which made a debut on UK’s television on Wednesday, premiered on Australian television earlier this year. It is the remake of Prisoner, an Australian TV series that followed the lives of women who were imprisoned in Wentworth Detention Centre. The series ran for 7 years between 1979 and 1986.
Da Silva told Australian Times that there was a huge pressure to get it right. She added: “We didn’t really know during filming if we had found the right balance between the reimagining and the original. It came down to the line. Once it was on television and people were responding the way they were we exhaled.”
However, it appeared that da Silva had nothing to worry. Critics described it as one of the best Australian dramas in recent memory and viewers’ response was overwhelmingly positive.
