Tsunami hits Solomon Islands following an earthquake

There are reports that people have died as a result of the tsunami, as well as many homes being damaged

A tsunami has hit the Solomon Islands after a 8.0-magnitude earthquake occurred nearby. Based on reports, at least four people are thought to have died.

 

The waves hit the west-side of Santa Cruz Island, located in Temotu, which is in the eastern part of the Solomon Islands, where it also caused much damage to property there.

 

Although reports are unclear as to the possible death toll following the event, it is understood that villages were hit by the tsunami and that many houses were left damaged.

 

Tsunami warnings had previously been issued by The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii, as it was predicted that South Pacific islands could be affected.

 

Other countries that were anticipating repercussions from the quake included Australia, New Zealand and also areas of Indonesia.

 

Those places to have received tsunami warnings included Fiji and Papua New Guinea among others, according to reports.

 

It is believed that as a result of the warnings many individuals managed to escape to higher ground.

 

At least 50 people died following an earthquake that hit the west of the Solomon Islands six years ago. Many villages were hit by the waves, which also meant there was damage to property and many people were left homeless.
