A hiker was trapped in a box where he had taken shelter from the storm 1,600ft up a mountain. A rambler rescued him after hearing a knowing sound and cries of “Let me out!”
The rescuer said: “Myself and my son were walking past Sty Head when we heard a knocking sound.
“We both thought we were imagining it as it was extremely windy, however we then heard ‘let me out’.”
He added: “We realised that the knocking was coming from the box, which you can imagine was very strange and unusual.
“I then heard another cry of ‘let me out’. We started a conversation with someone who was inside.
“We released the latches and with some uneasiness opened the door, when we saw a young man all hunched up inside.
“He said he got caught in a storm the previous night and took refuge, only to find that while he was asleep someone had locked him in.”
Meanwhile, a Keswick Mountain Rescue spokesman said: “While we recognise that there may be times where someone would need shelter having been benighted, we would really appreciate the equipment being put back in the same condition as it was removed.”
