Ms Cox won the 2015 general election to the seat of Batley and Spen. She made a mark for her efforts to help the victims of Syria’s civil war. She believed that the UK government should do more both to help the victims and use its influence to bring an end to the conflict.
EU referendum campaigns have been suspended as MPs express shock at the attack.
Meanwhile, a 52-year-old man, locally known as Tommy Mair, has been arrested near the scene. His house was sealed off by police who were guarding the property as forensic officers worked in the garden. According to his neighbours, he lived there for more than 30 years and does gardening chores for local people.
