According to a study published in Hypertension, 70per cent of children in the UK, who are supposed to eat less than a teaspoon of salt a day, are taking more than what is recommended.
Despite the country’s drive to cut salt levels in food, it has emerged that children are getting more salts by eating bread, cereals, meat, and dairy products that may have ‘hidden’ levels of salt.
In order to lessen salt intake in you and your children’s diet, below are some tips to keep in mind:
1. Take time to compare nutrition labels on food packaging and choose products that are lower in salt.
2. Stay away from cured meats and fish can that are high in salt.
3. Buy tinned vegetables and tinned pulses without added salt.
4. Check out the amount of salt included in ready-made pasta sauces. As much as possible, choose tomato-based sauces which are often lower in salt when compared to sauces containing bacon, olives, and ham.
5. Choose healthier snacks like fruit and vegetables.
6. Watch your soy sauce intake. Also, go easy on pickles, mustard, mayonnaise, and other table sauces.
