Three UK men are jailed in Dubai

Three men from Britain have been sentenced to four years each in prison over drug charges

Three Britons have each been handed four years jail time in Dubai. The men have been found guilty of possessing synthetic cannabis, often referred to as ‘spice’. All three deny the charges against them. The news comes among claims that they were tortured by police there.

 

The Brits, named as Grant Cameron, Karl Williams, and Suneet Jeerh who are all in their mid-twenties, were arrested by police while on holiday in Dubai last summer.

 

The trio were also charged with supplying the drug, but this was dropped.

 

There are claims that the three have been tortured by police. According to media reports, the claims state that they were beaten as well as subjected to electric shocks. Dubai police have denied the allegations against them.

 

Reportedly, it is believed there is no evidence concerning this.

 

It is expected there will be an investigation into the matter.

 

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office has said: “We are concerned about aspects of this and are formally raising these with the Emirati authorities.”

 

As well as this, Prime Minister David Cameron is expected to relate to the torture allegations and express his concern when he meets with Sheikh Khalifa in the UK early this week.

 

It is understood that the charity Reprievehas taken the case.

 

If an individual is convicted of supplying drugs it is thought they may face a sentence of around 15 years in jail.

 

The drug ‘spice’ was banned in Dubai at the start of July last year. It was made illegal in Britain late 2009.
