Donald Trump will be the new president of the United States after defeating Hillary Clinton in a shocking win. Mr Trump won key states including Florida, where Mrs Clinton had been expected to win following a surge in the Hispanic vote. Wisconsin, Michigan and New Hampshire, which were meant to be part of the Clinton firewall, were deadlocked.
She won the Democratic heartlands of California, Oregon, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, Vermont, Delaware, Illinois, Rhode Island, Hawaii, Washington and District of Columbia, as well as New Mexico and Colorado.
As votes are counted indicating a win for the republican, the US dollar sank and stock markets plummeted in wild Asian trading. Dow futures dropped by 800 points.
The mood is dark at Mrs Clinton’s election night party in New York City. Supporters were crying and staring stony-faced at the big screens showing election results.
The republicans also won the US House.
Mr Trump provoked controversy on the campaign trail for comments about women, Muslims and a plan to build a wall along the US-Mexican border.
Mrs Clinton, on the other hand, saw her campaign dogged by FBI investigations into whether she abused state secrets by operating a private email server during her time as US secretary of state.
