Dan Cluderay, the owner of Approved Food and who was featured on ITV’s Bargain Fever Britain last week, has said that consumers do not need to throw away food after their sell-by date.
He explained that sell-by dates are used by supermarkets for their own internal purposes and do not make the food dangerous when consumed. Best before and use by dates have far more significance to the consumer.
With the goal to educate consumers, he listed down the top 10 foods for The Independent that you can east after their sell-by date.
1. Crisps - as salts that are used to make these products preserve them very well.
2. Chocolate – the sugar present in chocolates helps preserve these yummy products.
3. Ketchup – this is proven to last up to a year if stored in a cool, dry place.
4. Yoghurt – can last up to six weeks beyond the date.
5. Hard cheese – unless it smells bad or is mouldy, it should be fine.
6. Milk – just like hard cheese, as long as the milk doesn’t smell bad, it can still be consumed safely
7. Eggs – as long as eggs sink in the water, they’re good.
8. Bread - you can still consume bread that is past its sell-by date as long as it doesn’t mould on it.
9. Rice – this can last not just for months but years.
10. Fruits and vegetables – as long as they don’t have mould and are not mushy, they are good to eat.
