The winners and the losers from the 83rd Academy Awards...

The King's Speech has been crowned Best Picture at the Oscars; with its star Colin Firth named Best Actor.

The film won four Oscars in total, also picking up awards for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.

Director Tom Hooper paid tribute to his film's stars, saying:

"Thank you to my wonderful actors, the triangle of man-love which is Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and me. I'm only here because of you guys."

Its best picture rival, The Social Network, came away with awards for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film Editing.

David Fincher's Inception also bagged four awards at the annual ceremony, scoring prizes for Best Cinematography, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing and Best Visual Effects.

Natalie Portman won Best Actress for her role in Black Swan, with Christian Bale and Melissa Leo winning Best Supporting Actor and Actress awards for boxing drama, The Fighter.

The King's Speech led the nominations, competing in 12 categories, and there had been eight nominations each for Inception and The Social Network.

The Cohen Brothers' Western True Grit, which was up for 10 awards, won nothing.

Portman, who had been the favourite to take home the prize for Best Actress, said:

"This is insane, and I truly, sincerely wish that the prize tonight was to get to work with my fellow nominees - I'm so in awe of you."

James Franco and Anne Hathaway presented the 83rd Academy Awards which took place on 27 February.
