The cost of dementia: More than 50,000 quit their jobs to care for relatives

A recent study revealed dementia is now costing businesses £1.6bn a year.

A landmark study by Public Health England has revealed that dementia has been costing businesses £1.6bn a year as 50,000 Britons are forced to quit their jobs to care for relatives suffering from the disease. 

 

The research also revealed that while only one in eight people are now caring for someone with dementia, more than half of these are attempting to juggle paid work with caring duties. 

 

The research was released ahead of a major TV advertising campaign that aim to encourage people to sign up as “dementia friends.” Under the scheme, volunteers will be given advice and support on how to care for people diagnosed with the condition. 

 

Based on official figures, there are about 700,000 people in England who are suffering from this condition and this is expected to double in the next 30 years due to the rapidly ageing population. 

 

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, said: “Dementia isn’t just a health condition – it attacks the fabric of our society and can take a huge toll on the families and friends of those affected by the disease. 

 

"I am urging everyone – families, communities and businesses to come together to ensure that people with dementia can continue to live fulfilling and rewarding lives.”
