Storms Desmond and Eva left swathes of Cumbria, Lancashire and Yorkshire under water. They also submerged Carlisle’s McVitie’s factory ovens affecting the production of table water biscuits, ginger nuts, bourbons and custard creams. The widespread shortage of biscuits has left many in disbelief.
Several brands, including boasters, water biscuits and other McVitie’s Jacob’s are now missing on grocery shelves.
Carlisle artist Lydia Leith said it was “very upsetting.”
"When I spoke to my friends about it they didn't believe me and they just thought it was a joke.
"But I guess if they went to the shops and tried to buy some they would realise it was a serious issue."
Several people have took to Twitter to talk about the crisis which some described as an “emergency”. Meanwhile, others consider the possibility that hoarding comes into play.
However, the British public has something to look forward to – the production of ginger nuts has resumed and the product should be back to grocery shelves by mid March.
McVitie's parent company, United Biscuits, has said previously that the complete resumption of production was its "absolute priority".
