According to a survey that was participated in by review aggregator service Metacritic’s users, Boyhood and Interstellar are 2014’s both best and most overrated films.
Boyhood, a coming of age drama that was filmed over a dozen years in short bursts to realistically document a family’s evolution has received a perfect score of 100 from critics and is currently one of the frontrunners for the Best Picture Oscar. However, some users voted it as the second most overrated movie of the year.
Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic Interstellar was a box-office hit and was declared the most overrated film by users mainly because viewers felt that the in vogue Matthew McConaughey and Christopher Nolan were revered by default.
Meanwhile, Eastern Promises director David Cronenberg, was vocal in criticising Metacritic as well as Rotten Tomatoes for blurring the line between film criticism and public opinion. He said: "I think the role of the critic has been very diminished, because you get a lot of people who set themselves up as critics by having a website where it says that they’re a critic."
