The Eiffel Tower was shut to all visitors after a terrorist suspect with “a large rucksack” was spotted ascending France’s most popular tourist attraction. Anti-terrorist police responded after the alarm has been raised at around 9am.
People who were lining to up were instructed to vacate the area while ticket booths were closed. The police then cordon off the area and moved the tourists to the banks near River Seine.
Despite numerous bomb alerts at the Eiffel Tower in recent years, police did not rule out the possibility that the suspect might be an extreme parachutist hoping to jump off the structure.
"It’s happened in the past," said the same police source. "The parachutist hides his kit the night before, and then gets into the tower and jumps off, while videoing."
