Tennis star Caroline Wozniacki has revealed in an interview the details of her sudden, shock split from golf champion Rory McIlroy following their New Year's Eve engagement.
The admission comes just after she crashed out of the French Open while he went on to win his first golfing tournament as a bachelor at Wentworth.
Caroline Wozniacki lost 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 to Yanina Wickmayer in Paris and went on to issue a statement: “I don’t really want to talk about my personal life. I hope that you all can understand that.
“The only thing I really have to say is to thank everybody for their support and sweet messages. That’s really nice.
“You know, what happens in my personal life, I just want to really keep that between my closest people around me. You know, I just have to move on.”
However, her plea for privacy backfired when she ended up fielding questions and ended up revealing more. She said: “Obviously it’s always you know, you’re not prepared for something like this, and came a bit as a shock.
“I felt a little bit rusty out there, but you know, I tried.
“I definitely can’t blame anyone but myself.”
Meanwhile McIlroy released his own statement: “The problem is mine.
“The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails.
"There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people.
“I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we have had.”
