Following the release of sunrise alarm clocks, which gradually wake you up by simulating sunrise, comes Sunrise Smart Pillow designed to wake you up with light. Developed by Los Angeles-based Mode Modern, it does more than just lighting up in the morning; it also tracks your sleep and streams your favourite music.
To use it, the user sets the alarm time using a dedicated app. They can then choose to have the “sunrise” starts anywhere from 5 to 30 minute before the set alarm time.
The pillow uses a motion sensor that measures how much the user is moving around and determines whether they’re currently in a state of deep or light sleep. It then wakes up the user by bringing up two rows of LEDS when they’re in light sleep, making for a less jarring waking experience.
The LEDS start out in a warm amber colour and gradually transitions to a brighter yellow as the alarm time approaches. The pillow then plays music streamed from the user’s phone when it is officially time to get up. The user can also use the app to receive a sleep score the previous night.
The Sunrise Smart Pillow, which is made from memory foam, is currently the subject of a successful Kickstarter campaign. Interested parties may pledge $99 to get one. Its estimated retail price is $299.
