"Spider-Man 2" has broken box office records in the US - taking 22.25 million on its first day.
In the latest instalment of the comic book adaptation Spidey, played by Tobey Maguire, takes on the mechanically enhanced Dr Octopus.
The previous opening day record was held by the first film in the series, which took 21.61 million on its first day of release in May 2002.
Fans of the first film - some dressed as their hero in red and blue spider suits - queued outside some of the 4,152 cinemas showing the film on its opening day in the United States and Canada.
However, the new film could not overtake "Shrek 2" for single day box office figures. The animated sequel grossed 24.61 million on May 22nd.
