The chilly start to September continues as Britons have been warned to expect snow this weekend. Temperatures are due to fall in parts of northern England and Scotland overnight on Saturday. The cold weather is due to an unusual summer “polar plume” of cold air from the Arctic.
Weather Channel forecaster Leon Brown, said: "A chilly night on Saturday with probable ground frosts and also an air frost in hollows."
The Met Office said: "Staying windy, especially in the East and feeling rather cool for early September."
Chief Scientist Professor Dame Julia Slingo said: "No-one can deny that we have had a pretty disappointing summer with a lot of unsettled weather and only a few warm spells, especially through July and August.
"Our weather has been dominated by low pressure over and to the west of the country that has brought us periods of heavy rain from the south - what we call the Spanish Plume."
Meanwhile, figures released by the Met Office revealed that this summer is the coldest in four years.
The UK's June 1-August 31 average temperature of 13.92C was 0.4C colder than normal and the coldest summer since 2011's 13.66C.
