R&B star Chris Brown has pleaded guilty to assaulting his ex-girlfriend, pop star Rihanna.
The rapper, who has previously denied the charges, admitted to one count of felony assault relating to an incident that occurred hours before the pair were due to perform at the Grammy Awards
He was given five years probation and ordered to complete six months community service.
According to an affidavit filed by an LA police detective, Brown was arrested on February 8 in Los Angeles where the altercation took place in his car.
It claims that when Rihanna checked Brown's mobile phone and found a text message from another woman, Brown attempted to push Rihanna out of the vehicle before punching her repeatedly.
He also bit her ear and tried to choke her, the affidavit states.
After Brown entered his guilty plea, Judge Schnegg said "I think it is commendable you took responsibility for your conduct."
He will be formally sentenced on August 5.
