Fans will have some time to wait before they see Homer and family at the cinema.
Writers have already started on the script, but production will not begin until the television version has ended and the show has just renewed its contract for anther two seasons.
Yardley Smith who provides the voice for Lisa Simpson said: "My wish for the show is that it goes out with a bang and not a pimple. And if we can do a movie and it can be as good as our best episodes, I'm thrilled. I think that would be wonderful."
The production of the current season has been marred by disputes over pay, with the leading actors reportedly asking for a substantial pay increase of around 3 million.
