Sheppey crossing 130-vehicle crash injures dozens

The Sheppey crossing crash which took place on Thursday and which injured dozens of people, is said to be the worst pile-up in 16 years.

Dozens of people were hurt in the Sheppey crossing crash that involved 130 vehicles. Eight of which sustained serious injuries.

 

According to ambulance crew, 35 victims required hospital treatment after the horrendous accident.  200 more people needed treatment for minor injuries or were informed about symptoms that may develop later on.

 

However, it was confirmed that nobody died in the worst pile-up in the last 16 years.

 

Victims were taken to hospitals in London, Canterbury, Maidstone, Margate, Ashford, and Medway. 

 

The accident was blamed on heavy fog and poor visibility. Also, drivers were said to have approached the crossing with no lights.

 

There were reports saying that the crash lasted for about 10 minutes as different vehicles continuously collided with each other. 

 

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said that investigation is underway. He also confirmed that a safety audit was implemented on the crossing one year after it was completed. 

 

"This audit concluded that accidents on the A249 had decreased since the completion of the scheme and that the accident rate was below the national average for that type of road.”
