Sheffield Wednesday striker Gary Madine has been jailed for 18 months after being found guilty of attacking two fans in two separate incidents.

The violence occurred in nightclubs. Madine, 23, has a previous conviction for knocking a man out in a pub in Carlisle.

Madine struck the football club's fan Daniel Beresford in the Paris Bar in Sheffield city centre in February 2012. The punch was so hard that it broke Beresford's nose.

Just four weeks later, he attacked another Sheffield Wednesday fan - bricklayer Reece Hall - in the Viper Room club, injuring his cheekbone.

The two counts were, respectively, actual bodily harm and grievous bodily harm.

Judge Rodney Jameson QC sentenced the football star to six months for the first offence and 12 months for the second.

Citing the player's temper, Judge Jameson said this as he passed his sentence: "When sober there is no reason to suppose that you would misbehave but I have to sentence you for serious offences which reflect the other side of your character.

"The side which comes out when you are in drink, which causes unprovoked violence causing serious injuries to innocent members of the public."

Because of his conviction, he has been automatically sacked by his club, ending his £5,000 a week salary.
