22-year-old British singer Sam Smith won big at this year’s Grammy Awards picking up four prizes including Record of the Year and Best New Artist. He beat superstars Beyonce and Pharell Williams who each won three awards.
Smith said: "Before I made this record, I was doing everything to try and get my music heard.”
"I tried to lose weight and I was making awful music and it was only until that I started to be myself that the music started to flow and people started to listen."
Meanwhile, R&B singer Beyonce and her rapper husband Jay Z won best R&B performance for Drunk In Love.
However, when Beyonce was beaten out to Album of the Year by Beck for Morning Phase, Kanye West stormed the stage just like he did years prior when Taylor Swift triumphed over Beyonce. Only this time he didn’t launch into a tirade about who should’ve won – the Watch the Throne icon quickly hurried back to his seat instead of passing comment despite Beck asking him to come back onto the stage.
Amid the glitz and glamour, President Barack Obama called on musicians to use their power to stop domestic violence.
In a taped message aired during the show, he said: "It's not OK and it has to stop.”
"Artists have a unique power to change minds and attitudes and get us thinking and talking about what matters."
