A reindeer, which was supposed to bring some festive fun to shoppers, escaped from a Christmas event at a Tesco store causing traffic chaos. The errant mammal was startled by a car horn and took to the streets at around 12pm.
Human resources worker Danny Hall saw the drama unfold and said: "The reindeer was just being led out of its trailer when there was a loud 'beep' from a car horn which must have startled it.
"The poor thing looked really scared and just ran off.
"It was almost hit by a bus.
"I don't think people could believe their eyes when they saw a reindeer spiriting past them.
"It was completely bizarre, like something from a film."
Local resident Amanda Walker, 35, said: "It came charging past my house with a group of people following behind.
"It was an incredible sight.
"I doubt I'll ever see anything like it again.
"I don't think anyone will believe me when I tell them.
"You bet the odd squirrel around here, but never a reindeer."
Sam Manning, from The Animal Company that run the festive event, confirmed later on that the reindeer was found in a garden.
