He scared the establishment to death in the 1970s and endured the perils of the jungle in the most recent I'm a Celebrity...Get Me out of Here!, but John Lydon - formerly Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols - has just faced down his most terrifying opponent yet.
Filming a new show about sharks for Five, entitled John Lydon's Shark Attack, the singer found himself confronted with a monstrous great white off the South African coast.
Diving in an area known as "shark alley", Lydon might have known what to expect, but on coming face to face with the giant fish, it was the punk icon's famous stare that came out on top.
A Five source told the Daily Star newspaper: "It's a pretty tense moment as John and the shark stare at each other - but the shark appears more frightened."
Lydon himself remarked: "I'm an ugly old sod - but what you are about to see is a proper set of dentures."
During his self-terminated spell in the Australian jungle earlier this year, Lydon displayed a hitherto unknown love of nature and the undergrowth's more unpleasant inhabitants.
John Lydon's Shark Attack will be aired on November 3rd.
