Test your maths: Take the National Numeracy Challenge

Experts are claiming that poor numeracy is costing the economy a staggering £20bn a year.

National Numeracy found that many of us struggle with simple sums such as working out deals while shopping or measuring ingredients or administering medicines. The organisation found that underperforming in mathematics directly results in lower earnings as well.

Karen Hancock, an economist with the Pro Bono Economy charity, also said: "The report begins with the finding that almost half the adult population has numeracy no greater than that expected of a child leaving primary school. For a developed country that’s pretty shocking."
