Halloween is fast approaching and many will undoubtedly visit spooky locations to celebrate the big event. However, one destination is crowded with visitors all year round – both on this side of the spiritual divide and, many believe, the other.
Cassadaga in Florida is dubbed as the “psychic capital of the world” and has the reputation for being the town where people who want to talk to the dead can go. The residents help visitors to make a connection to the other side. Aside from having a number of “haunted” hotels and spooky graveyards, the town is also home to hundreds of people claiming to have the gift of making dead men and women talk.
Kristin Congdon, a professor at the University of Central Florida who contributed to the book Cassadaga: The South’s Oldest Spiritualist Community, said: “Because there was a lot of fakery going on at the turn of the century, a lot of Spiritualists were shut down,”
“Now in places like Cassadaga, they monitor all of that very carefully and are very concerned about the kinds of people who do readings, who do spiritual counseling, and who address the public, so there isn’t any fakery or forgery.”
