Police officer arrested over Andrew Mitchell leaked ‘pleb’ case

A police officer has been arrested for allegedly leaking information on the ‘plebgate’ incident

A police officer was arrested on Saturday following allegations that details on the ‘pleb’ affair, which concerns Andrew Mitchell, were leaked. The officer, who is part of the Diplomatic Protection Group, has been suspended from duty. The individual was released on bail on Sunday.

 

The police officer was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, according to the Metropolitan Police. The ‘pleb’ incident relates to former Chief Whip Andrew Mitchell, who resigned from his post in October, apparently insulting an officer by using the word ‘pleb’.

 

Mr. Mitchell denies using the ‘words attributed’ to him, but has apologised for his conduct. It is understood that a log concerning the incident was leaked to the media.

 

The incident, which took place in September, relates to Mr. Mitchell wanting to use Downing Street’s main gates. Supposedly he was instructed to use the pathway designed for pedestrians.

 

The Met Police has said that the officer who has been arrested was not one of those on duty when Mr. Mitchell made the request to exit via the main gates. It is understood there is no evidence to show that any of the officers on duty that day were linked to the leaking of information.

 

The police officer is expected to face further questioning in January, 2013.
