Sir Paul McCartney claims producer Nigel Godrich refused to work with him - unless he made an album that "sounded like Paul McCartney."

The former Beatle approached the acclaimed Radiohead producer to work with him on latest record 'Chaos and Creation in the Backyard' after being a fan of his past work.

However, McCartney claims Godrich - who also produced last year's Band Aid 20 charity record - told him he wasn't interested in the proposition unless the legendary musician went back to his Beatles roots.

He said: "We met up in my office, as a sort of business meeting, quite casual. To talk about what we'd do if we worked together.

"I suggested a couple of possible things I was listening to that we might draw off. But he said, "If I do it with you, it's got to be you. We've got enough to draw off. That's what people want, an album that sounds like you."

Despite being surprised by Godrich's initial response, McCartney claims he was inspired by the producer and is convinced the pair have made a great album together.

He added: "Our ideas were surprisingly similar. It made me put pressure on myself and motivate myself."
