Oscar Pistorius, who is being tried for the death of Reeva Steenkamp in South Africa, took to the stand on Tuesday. He began his testimony by giving a tearful apology to the family of the victim.
The court heard the state of his relationship with Steenkamp before the shooting incident. Responding to his lawyer questions, he said that in January 2013: "I was very keen on Reeva. If anything I was more keen than she was."
He continued: "I let her just take her space - it wasn't always easy, I was besotted with her... the relationship built up to a point in December, January that we really... started caring about each other, we start talking about future plans."
Clarifying the tense messages they exchanged through WhatsApp, he said: "I just think it was a bad hour in our relationship.” He added that he was upset when Ms Steenkamp talked to another man without introducing him. "I was a bit upset, I felt neglected... I was being sensitive, insecure... I wasn't kind to her like I should have been."
Mr Pistorius shot Ms Steenkamp on February 14, 2013 claiming that he has mistaken her for an intruder. If found guilty of her murder, the athlete could face life imprisonment.
