Open Water, the low budget shark-fest, has chomped its way to the top of the UK box office charts after a strong opening weekend in which it took over 1.9 million.

Based a true story the film which shows the terror of a scuba-diving couple accidentally left out at sea with bull sharks for company has proven a surprise hit at the global box office.

Open Water revels in its budget limitations, employing grainy digital camera and actual shots of real life sharks, rather than CGI renditions.

For film-fans of a more nervous disposition, romantic comedy The Terminal is keeping it's feet firmly on dry land at number two, despite dropping from the top spot in order to make way for its fishy friend.

Will Ferrell's ode to the mustachio sporting macho man of the 70's in the form of Anchor Man was one of only three new entries in the box office top ten this week - a surprisingly poor showing for the tale of misogynistic newsreader Ron Burgundy, suggesting the Midas touch of the 'Frat Pack's' recent outings may be in need of a creative polish.

Romantic thriller Wicker Park, starring chisel-jawed Josh Harnett, entered the chart at number eight, with takings of 300,000, while Super Size Me, a somewhat more relaxed polemic on the vagaries of McDonald's culinary delights just missed out on a top 10 place in its opening week.
