London 2012: GB gold medallist David Weir on track for another win

Star David Weir has secured his place in the 1,500m wheelchair final after coming third with a time of 3minutes 11.35seconds.

 

The 33-year-old Londoner gained his glory on Monday morning, shortly after winning the T54 5,000m final on Sunday night at the Olympic stadium.

 

The competitor admitted he felt quite fresh before the start of the heat, saying to the Mail Online: “A lot of it's adrenaline as well from last night.”

 

Marcel Hug from Switzerland won the 1,500m in 3minutes 11.17seconds, with Thailand’s Prawat Wahoram coming in second.

 

Weir, whose fiancée is expecting their second child, delighted crowds on Sunday when he took gold, with Australian Kurt Fearnley in second place and French Julien Casoli coming third.

 

“I put this down to hard work and determination,” Weir said after his success at the weekend, as reported by the Mail Online.

 

“It is tough to get motivated at my age. But this was the main one - this was the one I wanted to win the most.

 

He added: “I am a championship racer. I get into the right mindset to try my best.”

 

Team GB are in second place in the medal table with over 53 medals in total, including at least 15 golds.

 

The London 2012 Paralympics has already seen double the number of gold medals won by athletes compared to Beijing 2008.

 

Weir was Team GB’s only track gold-winner at the Beijing Paralympics in 2008, after coming first in both the 800m and 1500m events.
