Npower is the latest of the major energy providers to increase their prices to the public, following recent spikes in costs from Scottish & Southern Energy and British Gas. NPower customers can expect a 10.4% increase before Christmas.
Household tariffs will jump 9.3% for electricity and 11.1% for gas with the price rises imposed from December 1st.
Chief executive Paul Massara said: "This has been a really hard decision for us and I know this news will not be welcome.
"Nobody wants to see their bills go up particularly when household budgets are being squeezed.
"We've tried to protect customers for as long as possible but the truth is we simply cannot hold off any longer.
"There are many external costs which are increasing your bills, including Government schemes and the actual cost of buying energy."
The news means that half of the 'big six' energy companies have now raised their prices within the last few weeks alone.
At time of press, E.ON, Scottish Power and EDF Energy are yet to follow suit.
The government's response to these increases has been to advise customers to shop around for the best deal and switch providers if necessary.
