Tuesday bombings in the central Nigerian city of Jos has resulted to the death of at least 118 people. Officials say that the death toll is likely to increase.
As of this writing, no one has taken responsibility for the explosions but the bombs bore the hallmarks of other attacks by Islamist sect Boko Haram. This is the same group that kidnapped more than 300 schoolgirls and which started a bloody five-year campaign to establish a caliphate from a remote north-eastern school.
Abdulsalam Mohd of Nigeria's national emergency management agency, said: "It happened very close to the market so most of the victims were people plying their trade. Some had children with them.”
"The casualty figure is likely to rise because the fire service wasn't able to clear all the rubble today. They will continue to remove the debris tomorrow and we are expecting to recover more bodies then.”
At least one of the bombs is believed to have come from a car parked with explosives. Witnesses say that the loud explosion tore a hole in the ground and caused surrounding vehicles to catch fire.
