New car seats rule are scheduled to be introduced later this year, which will see car booster seats without a back banned for younger children. In current rules, children around three years old are allowed to travel in cars while sitting on a backless booster seat. However, experts say that the seat is unsuitable for younger children and new guidelines will be implemented.
Under the new rules, backless booster seats will only be used for children weighing more than 22kg and no taller than 125cm. Children under three must be in a child car seat in the back of the vehicle. However, in cases when there’s no room for a third child seat in the back of the car, they can be seated in the front but must be in a child car seat. Violators may be fined £500.
