94-year-old Nelson Mandela has been re-admitted to hospital for treatment regarding a lung infection, it has emerged. The former President of South Africa was taken to hospital late on Wednesdaynight according to reports.
The news follows Mr. Mandela’s recent visit to hospital last year, in December, where he received treatment. This was also in regards to a lung infection.
In a statement President Jacob Zuma has commented on the situation: "We appeal to the people of South Africa and the world to pray for our beloved Madiba and his family and to keep them in their thoughts.”
Adding: “We have full confidence in the medical team and know that they will do everything possible to ensure recovery."
Mr. Mandela has been to hospital on several occasions in the last 24months with regards to his health, although it is hoped that all is well with the former leader. Many people will surely be praying for his speedy recovery.
Mr. Mandela was born in the summer of 1918 and served as the President of South Africa for five years during the 1990s; from 1994 to 1999.
During his time in the post, much attention was paid to the issue of racism among other things, including inequality. He was also President of the African National Congress in the same decade for around six years.
Following his arrest in 1962, Mr. Mandela received a lengthy prison sentence after being convicted of sabotage as well as conspiracy (against the government).
