Pop singer George Michael has pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of drugs.

The 47-year-old formwer Wham! frontman also admitted possessing cannabis before being given a six-month interim driving ban.

Michael was told by the judge that his offences were "a serious matter" and that he could face imprisonment. He will be sentenced on September 14.

The pop star was arrested on 4 July in Hampstead, north London, after he crashed his Range Rover into a Snappy Snaps photography shop.

The court was told that a police patrol found him slumped at the wheel of his car with its engine still running in the early hours of July 4.

He was arrested and taken to Hampstead police station where he was found to be carrying cannabis cigarettes, while a blood sample confirmed the use of cannabis-related chemicals but no traces of alcohol.

In May 2007, Michael admitted another charge of driving while unfit through use of drugs at Brent Magistrates Court in London.

Michael's hits included 'Careless Whisper', 'Fast Love' and 'Faith'. Recently he scored chart success with 'December Song', released last Christmas.
