A Pakistani man has been arrested on suspicion of cannibalism after the head of a newborn baby was found in his home. The charge comes just three years after Mohammad Arif was jailed for the same crime.
Police raided Mohammad Arif's home in the Punjab province after neighbours detected a vile stench.
Police official Zafar Iqbal stated: “The neighbours complained to police of a foul stench and police raided the house immediately. We arrested him after discovering a head of a baby. Arif has admitted his crime."
Mohammad Arif admitted to police that he and his brother Farman Ali ate the child after extracting its corpse from a graveyard.
“Arif has been arrested and he has confessed that his brother brought the dead body of the newborn from the nearby graveyard,” Ameer Abdullah, police chief of Bhakkar district where the village is located, told AFP.
“Arif told police that both of them later cooked the dead body and ate it.”
The brothers struck the same village in April 2011 and were jailed for two years after the body of a 24-year-old woman was discovered minus a leg. The woman had died of cancer and the men set about eating her remains.
Cannibalism isn't actually a crime in Pakistan's penal code but desecrating a dead body is.
While Mohammad Arif was arrested, the hunt for his brother Ali is underway.
